| PEAR
Known since prehistory, the pear is originally from South-East Europe and Western Asia.
The pear is filled with fiber and vitamin C, providing 16% of the recommended daily allowance of fiber. Eaten regularly it helps to maintain low cholesterol and aids digestion.
To accelerate the ripening, place the pears in a paper bag at room temperature: in a few days they will be ripe and ready to eat.
Why use a paper bag? While ripening, pears naturally produce ethylene, a gas and hormone. A bag helps to keep this gas near the fruit. And paper bags help prevent the fruit from rotting as they absorb any moisture produced. Plastic bags will cause fruit to ripen too quickly and because it seals in humidity may cause rot.
Therefore a paper bag is to be preferred as it lets the fruit breathe and maintains an environment which is right for the fruit.
Ripe pears should be eaten immediately, although if placed in the refrigerator they will keep for 2-5 days. |
